Coach Highlight: Emily D.

Q: How old are you, how long have you been doing Crossfit ?⠀
A: I've been doing CrossFit for 2.5 years...when I was 2.5 years younger than I currently am.⠀

Q: What's something you're surprisingly good at that most people don't know (could be anything)?⠀
A: I have a master's degree in social work that is collecting dust in my closet. But it has taught me how to validate other people's feelings rather than try to fix them, which I think should be a required course when you turn 18.⠀

Q: What are you most proud of in your life?⠀
A: I'm most proud when anything I do positively affects someone else, be it through social work, improv, music, or encouraging someone at the gym. Hearing someone say "thank you for listening" when that's literally all you did is one of the most powerful feelings.⠀

Q: What's your life outside of CrossFit look like?⠀
A: I am an actress and singer, and I spend my downtime in my car making absurd selfie videos and posting them to Insta-stories which are deleted after a day. My parents are so proud.⠀

Q: Where do you see your self in 5yrs?⠀
A: My lifelong goal is to de-stigmatize mental illness, and I'd love to be able to engage that population through fitness and comedy. I found both CrossFit and acting at a low point in my life, and they really helped me press on. I want people to know that there are communities like ours at CrossFit Santa Monica that can give them a reason to get out of bed in the morning and find an inner strength they didn't know they had.
