Outside the Box

John M.

Q: How old are you and how long have you been doing CrossFit ?
A: 32 years old and I have been doing CrossFit for about a year.

Q: What's something you're surprisingly good at that most people don't know (could be anything)?
A: Two things - both welcoming a challenge: I've never met anyone who can eat more pizza than me, and I've NEVER been beaten in a heads up Sudoku challenge

Q: What are you most proud of in your life?
A: Ability to crush PIZZA! In all seriousness, probably the great relationships I have in my life!

Q: What's your life outside of CrossFit look like ?
A: Traveling, active, outdoors, running races, spending time with friends & family, trying to learn how to take cool pictures mostly while traveling, and I have a day job at a consulting firm.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5yrs?
A: Shirtless somewhere with an unnecessary amount of chalk residue on my pants, looking down at a big pool of sweat or just enjoying what life has thrown my way 1,825 days from now

Q: How old are you, how long have you been doing Crossfit ?⠀
A: I've been doing CrossFit for 2.5 years...when I was 2.5 years younger than I currently am.⠀

Q: What's something you're surprisingly good at that most people don't know (could be anything)?⠀
A: I have a master's degree in social work that is collecting dust in my closet. But it has taught me how to validate other people's feelings rather than try to fix them, which I think should be a required course when you turn 18.⠀

Q: What are you most proud of in your life?⠀
A: I'm most proud when anything I do positively affects someone else, be it through social work, improv, music, or encouraging someone at the gym. Hearing someone say "thank you for listening" when that's literally all you did is one of the most powerful feelings.⠀

Q: What's your life outside of CrossFit look like?⠀
A: I am an actress and singer, and I spend my downtime in my car making absurd selfie videos and posting them to Insta-stories which are deleted after a day. My parents are so proud.⠀

Q: Where do you see your self in 5yrs?⠀
A: My lifelong goal is to de-stigmatize mental illness, and I'd love to be able to engage that population through fitness and comedy. I found both CrossFit and acting at a low point in my life, and they really helped me press on. I want people to know that there are communities like ours at CrossFit Santa Monica that can give them a reason to get out of bed in the morning and find an inner strength they didn't know they had.

Q: How old are you, how long have you been doing crossfit ?
A: 30 years old. Been doing CrossFit for almost a year at Santa Monica. Did it for about the same time at a gym in Hermosa. So you could say I’m taking my practice to the next level.

Q: What's your occupation?
A: Wealth management. I started out as a CPA, but took the ubiquitous "you don’t look like a CPA" compliments to heart and moved into investments and planning.

Q: What's something you’re surprisingly good at that most people don't know (could be anything)
A: Board games. Something about the mix of strategy and tearing friendships apart really gets me going.

Q: What are you most proud of in your life?
A: Finding purpose outside of myself.

Q: What's your life outside of CrossFit look like ?
A: Enjoying the spoils of beach life. Lots of surfing, volleyball, biking, and the like. You know, all that “use your fitness” talk.

Q: Where do you see your self in 5yrs ?
A: See above.

Q: What's your occupation?
A: I'm a Program Manager for City Year Los Angeles, an education non-profit based in 27 LAUSD schools providing extra support for students who are off track to graduate.

Q: How old are you, how long have you been doing crossfit ?
A: 27! I've been dabbling in CrossFit for about 3 years. Mixing it up right now with some marathon training, planning to really get back to it in April 2016.

Q: What's something your surprised good at that most people don't know (could be anything)?
A: Baking - it's my stress relief and I pride myself in making some damn good cookies and cake.

Q: What are you most proud of in your life?
A: That's a big question... I'd say I'm most proud of walking on to the Women's Rowing team at Univ. of Michigan as a freshman as a true novice and winning a Big Ten Championship and National Title in my senior year.

Q: What's your life outside of CrossFit look like?
A: Lots of work, trying new food and adventures, playing soccer, and travel!

Q: Where do you see your self in 5yrs ?
A: 32, hmm.. Hopefully traveling to new places and working towards upper management within a non-profit or education administration.
